Submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change
On June 7th, Open Secrets and the Access to Information Coalition for the Energy Sector (ATIC) submitted a crucial report to the UN Special Rapporteur for Climate Change. This report, focusing on Access to Information on Climate Change and Human Rights, urges the following recommendations for South Africa:
1. Compliance with the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA): Public bodies should meaningfully respond to PAIA’s requirements for voluntary or automatic disclosure of certain records.
2. Proactive Role of the Information Regulator: The Information Regulator should ensure that public bodies lawfully and promptly respond to information requests.
3. Reflecting Constitutional Principles: The state and public entities must respond to requests in a manner that upholds the constitutional principles of openness, transparency, and accountability.
The Access to Information Coalition for the Energy Sector (ATIC) comprises South African civil society organizations dedicated to promoting transparency and accountability in the energy sector. Open Secrets serves as the Secretariat for ATIC and its working group.
