Newzroom Afrika | ‘Real estate industry attracting ‘corrupt’ investors’
The real estate industry has been identified as a sector attracting alleged corrupt investors. An Open Secrets probe has tracked R162 million in homes purchased by politically connected individuals, mainly from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Mozambique. This is revealed in court documents acquired from deeds office records and confidential source information following a similar investigation after a high ranking case that brought up reasoning behind the Financial Action Task Force’s grey list. Journalist Ra’eesa Pather, who was the lead investigator in this project, talks to Tumisang Ndlovu.
